Expansion of the Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport
The growing number of passengers who use the Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, and the perspective of holding the EURO 2012 European Football Championship necessitate swift expansion of the airport. Hence, the advanced preparations to the construction of the new passenger terminal and apron.
The performance of this task will increase the passenger capacity of the Gdansk Airport by 100%, i.e. from 2.5 to 5 million passengers (PAX) per year. The investment will contribute to the enhancement of traffic safety and will improve the passenger services.
The new terminal (as phase II of the investment project) will be constructed west of the existing terminal and parallel to the designed access road and the existing airstrip.
The building will be constructed as a hall with two functional zones, i.e. the airside facilities – the baggage sorting plant and the waiting room as well as the landside zones – a departures lounge, airline offices, catering and services. The terminals will communicate via a connecting passage on the 1st floor level.

The project is valued at PLN 284.4 million, and the contribution from the EU funds reaches PLN 74.74 million. The works are scheduled to be completed in 2012. Further stage envisages modernisation of the airport infrastructure, and will include the construction of a taxiway, the patrol and technical road, a de-icing stand ion a special apron, and a system of disposing storm water from the entire airfield. The estimate net cost of stage two adds up to PLN 154.8 million, out of which PLN 58.21 million qualifies for financing from the EU funds. The works on stage two are scheduled for completion in the year 2015.
